McDonald, M. (2005). Saving the liberty bell. (Illus. by Marsha Gray Carrington). New York: Antheneum. Grades 1-3. Historical fiction.

John Jacob Mickley, eleven years old, tells his younger siblings of the role he and his father had in saving the Liberty Bell by helping to conceal it from the approaching British soldiers. The rush was on to hide objects made of metal from the Redcoats, so John Jacob and his father transported the Liberty bell in their wagon pulled by horses to their hometown of Northampton. Students will be enthralled by this tall but true story.
